Honour your parents
What does the Bible have to say about families?
I’m aware that sometimes our experience of family is not always happy - that there may be those who have been so badly hurt by parents and families that it is hard to even think about this subject, or those who feel guilty or have regrets of how they have been as parents or children - or those who are alone and no longer have any family.
God knows your situation … he knew what your situation would be when he gave this commandment to Moses
When God gave this commandment, the family was the fundamental building block of society - but not the “nuclear” or “unitary” family that we have today. In fact the family structure included the wider household - not just parents and children, but also servants and visitors and whoever happened to be around at the time.
The parents were the key people who held it together and made it happen.
So what out today?
Parenting is hard work - we owe it to God and to our children to do it to the best of our ability - but why?
- God says so (see Mal 1:6)
- Jesus honoured his parents
- When you honour your father and mother it pleases God
- Following the command brings a blessing
If you can’t love a person that you can see - how can you love God (1 John 4:20)?
