Sometimes you can’t make it on your own
We continue our exploration of themes inspired by U2 lyrics from How to dismantle an atomic bomb.
Right from the start of the Book of Genesis it is clear that we are not meant to be alone - that we need companionship and community.
Jesus sent out the disciples in twos in Mark 6:7-13 because then people would not only see two Christians they would see a small Christian community.
How to dismantle an atomic bomb - “Ok so I confess it is the strangest sermon title I have ever been given” says Alan.
Metaphorical bombs strike if anything with even greater impact that the atom bombs used to end the 2nd Wolrd War. Divorce, abuse, Alzheimer’s, cancer, depression and many more shells have exploded and are exploding all around us. How are we in the name of the God we love and the Lord we serve going to defuse those bombs either to prevent the damage or to bring healing into it?
In this Easter season we believe in new life and in resurrection and those things must in some way or other apply to those pains and potential pains.
I have ministered in two university cities and in both parishes there was a huge ministry in the vicarage for lonely and homesick students. In one of those parishes a seaside parish another huge proportion of ministry was to lonely elderly people who had moved away from their traditional home to find a dream. Then one partner had died leaving the other lonely and desolate.
