<itunes:summary>As Christians, we are called to be salt and light to the world. Our challenge though is to make sure the light can be seen by others.
In Mark 4:21-24, we are reminded that you don't light a candle then put a basket over it.

For the light of Jesus is to be seen, we need to be where people are - building up relationships and trust of those around us. We do not live in a society where there is a general awareness of God and the teaching of the Bible, and we cannot expect most people to simply turn up to church events.

We need to be lights on a stand.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Matthew 1:12-19 lists part of Jesus' family tree - and tells us something about who he was and his family history, although it tells us very little about Joseph or Mary - key players in the Nativity story.

Over the last few months we have been looking at our vision, looking back at where we come from and forward to God's calling and vision:

	Who are we?

What is our DNA - who are we?

What is God calling us to be?

What do others expect us to be?

What say do we have in the future?

What we want for the future is primarily to know who He wants us to be and how He plans to transform from what we are into His vision for us?
But there are some givens:

We are loved ndash; we are valued ndash; we are resourced by all the riches of our Father.

We are seeking God among brothers and sisters that love us and want the best for us.

We are Christians so we know that by definition the best is yet to come?

2009 will be an important year. We enter it as brothers and sisters we enter it shoulder to shoulder with partners in mission.</itunes:summary>

We continue our exploration of themes inspired by U2 lyrics from How to dismantle an atomic bomb.

Right from the start of the Book of Genesis it is clear that we are not meant to be alone - that we need companionship and community.
Jesus sent out the disciples in twos in Mark 6:7-13 because then people would not only see two Christians they would see a small Christian community.

<itunes:summary>How to dismantle an atomic bomb - "Ok so I confess it is the strangest sermon title I have ever been given" says Alan.

Metaphorical bombs strike if anything with even greater impact that the atom bombs used to end the 2nd Wolrd War. Divorce, abuse, Alzheimerrsquo;s, cancer, depression and many more shells have exploded and are exploding all around us. How are we in the name of the God we love and the Lord we serve going to defuse those bombs either to prevent the damage or to bring healing into it?

In this Easter season we believe in new life and in resurrection and those things must in some way or other apply to those pains and potential pains.

I have ministered in two university cities and in both parishes there was a huge ministry in the vicarage for lonely and homesick students. In one of those parishes a seaside parish another huge proportion of ministry was to lonely elderly people who had moved away from their traditional home to find a dream. Then one partner had died leaving the other lonely and desolate. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Wouldnrsquo;t it be great if our heart beat so much with the heart of Jesus that we would meet a need and know what Jesus would want us to do and do it without complaining or whinging. That does not mean it wont be scary or risky. But just letrsquo;s remind ourselves of what we believe.

We believe that there are many rooms in our fathers house and that there is a room for as many people in Chilwell as we can welcome in and for those of us that trust Christ it means that we show in our lives and actions that we are doing this out of a confidence that one of those rooms is also for us. We believe that Jesus is the way to life and we believe that he wants us to point others to him.

We believe that he forever long has given us this place as a base to serve him from. A good base and we praise him for it.

As we believe Jesus in all these things lets believe that this year 2007 will be best year of Pathwayrsquo;s ten years. A year of growth in all kinds of ways and a year in which we glorify our master Jesus by doing him the courtesy of believing and trusting him.

<itunes:summary>Before becoming Vicar of Chilwell, Alan undertook research into churches which had shown growth.

Using that research and the research of others to inform his vision for Chilwell, Alan presents several models of church and poses questions about the shape of Chilwell as a parish.

We could be seen as an affilliated group of pastoral-based congregations - or (and here is a challenge) we could be seen as a church of 400 in a parish of 14000.

	What are we good at?
	What are our strengths?
How can we share those with other churches?
How can we become a resourcing parish?
	What does it mean anyway?

<itunes:summary>Esther - a person who was in the right place at the right time ... let's look at the historical context for the story.

Around 479BC the remnant of Israel was in captivity. 50 years earlier, 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom were lost to Assyria. Then Babylon conquered Assyria and the remaining two tribes (Southern Kingdom) brought into captivity. The ruling classes, the skilled people, the ones who could read and write, were taken leaving only the workers in Jerusalem.
It was a tricky time for Israel - would faith and Jewish identity survive?

Brief summary of the story - Esther is brought up by her uncle Mordecai (a court adviser who uncovers a plot against the king), who persuades her to put herself forward when King Xerxes decides he needs a new wife. She gets the job.
Meanwhile, Haman, the prime minister decides everyone should bow down to him. Unfortunately for him the Jewish people do not bow down to anyone but God. Haman (egged on by his wife) orders all Jews to be killed, and builds a 75 foot gallows for Mordecai.
This could be then end for Israel.
However - Mordecai asks Esther to plead their case to Xerces, and taking her life into her hands invites Xerces to a feast. Now (although the book doesn't mention God directly) God is working behind the scenes. Before the feast, Xerces has a bad night and calls for his favourite reading matter "the Xploits of Xerxes" - and opens it at the place where it tells of Mordecai saving the king's life. So when he goes to the feast is is well disposed to listen to what Esther has to say about Haman's plans. Mordecai is made PM, Haman's gallows is tested on Haman and it all ends happily for Esther and the Jewish people - who still celebrate the Feast of Purim.

Faith survived because ordinary people like Esther and Mordecai kept "the rumour of God" alive
Because of prophets like Ezekiel and faith leaders like Mordecai and willing servants like Esther faith made it through Exile

Ezra and Nehemiah could rebuild because Esther was faithful

Never underestimate the power of the faithfulness of an ordinary Christian!

Est 4:14b ldquo;Who knows? Maybe you were made queen for just such a time as this."

A name is more than just a tag to identify someone - in biblical times the name defined the person, in the same way that job roles very often define us today.

So who is the "I AM" that Moses encountered? And why YHWH? And what about the new testament - Abba?
