<itunes:summary>Back in April 2008 at the start of a series on Paul's letter to the church in Rome, we wrote some letters.

Kev's example letter is elsewhere on this site.
Looking back at these letters, there is a certain resonance with the events that we are going through at present:
Hi There
It was great to visit you last week and join with you in worship of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I can see the love you have for Him and each other. The worship in your church is pleasing to God and I encourage you to to continue praising the Lord and learning how to love each other.

You do need to get that sound system sorted out though.

I promise to hold you in my prayers and see you all again soon.
Signed by (but probably not written by) St Paul. (Not sure which sound system that would be)

To whom it may concern.
It is great to hear that things are going well with you as your minister's retirement approaches.
This is a challenging time for you as you say goodbye to someone you have loved and has led you well and furthermore as you start to look for a new leader.
Remember all who do so, do so by serving, and it is God who we serve and Jesus who is the servant. Follow Him with all your heart and your struggles will bear fruit in the community around you.
Peace out!
An American greeting?

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ.
We have heard about the great work in the community that you church has done and is doing, and the vibrancy of your worship and praise.
We are, though, saddened to hear that there is discord amongst some of your members. We would like to encourage you to pray togther and listen to God and to each other. Encorage each other to use the gifts and talents that God has given each one of you. Each of you is special in the eyes of God, each of you is valued.

Finally:
From a fellow traveller to my friends.
I was sorry to hear your bad news and I'll be sure that my prayers are with you and your family.
For a tragic event affects the whole community, but praise God, He is working in all things to His good.

Even in the darkest times, God is with us and it is encoraging to hear that you have come together to support the family.

Remember that Esther was put in her situation of leadership for "such a time as this".

Blessings and greetings in His name.

<itunes:summary>Some verses of the Bible are very well known (for example John 3:16) and parts of Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome is no exception - but sometimes we need to read on, to get the rest of the verse in context, for example Romans 3:23 - sometimes we stop too soon and miss an important punctuation mark.

Everyone - no matter who you are, what you've done, what your background is under the same judgement - but everyone gets the same freedom.

<itunes:summary>We are at the end of our short series of worship based on Mark 12:30.

And we hope that by now you realise that worship is not simply singing songs on a Sunday morning - rather it is something we do all the time. Worship is as much about who we are as it is about what we do.

Some verses to look at: (you can click the links to view them, thanks to Biblegateway.com and Scripturizer Remix

	Ps 93:1
	Ps 96:6
	Ps 118:14
	1 Tim 1:12

Mike Pilavachi tells us

The heart of worship is and always has been blessing Him, coming to intimacy with Him, giving to Him, he is the centre of worship and how dare we ever make us the centre of worship. Worship isn't to please me, it's to please Jesus. Worship is for Jesus, it's to Jesus, and it's about Jesus.

If our job is to worship with all our stength, and worship is about servingm then the basic question is "What would you like the people who see and hear us in worship to think about Jesus"?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>David (later King of Israel) was a young shepherd boy who took on the champion of the Phillistines - by any measure it is an unfair battle.

(The story is in the Old Testament in 1 Sam 17.)

There are some things in our society that are big and scary: on the face of it, there seems to be an similar unequal battle. So do we run away from the fight? Knowing that God is with us; that He has a plan, like David we can run into the battle.

David knew who he was - didn't need extra bits and pieces.
He knew he committed to the fight - so he ran into it.
He knew that he had God with him.

<itunes:summary>In Oliver Stone's film Any Given Sunday a football coach (Tony D'Amato, played by Al Pachino) makes an inspirational speech to the team ...

Either, we heal, as a team, or we're gonna crumble inch by inch, play by play till we're finished.
We're in hell right now, gentlemen, believe me, and we can stay here or we can fight our way back into the light we can climb outta hell one inch at a time.
...
But, you only learn that, when you start losing stuff you find out, life's a game of inches.
So is football, because, in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small.

I mean, one half a step too late, or too early, and you dont quite make it, one half second too slow, too fast, you dont quite catch it, the inches we need are everywhere around us , they're in every break of the game, every minute, every second.
On this team, we fight for that inch.
On this team, we tear ourselves and everyone else around us, to pieces for that inch.
We claw with our fingernails for that inch, because we know, when we head up all those inches, thats gonna make the difference, between winning and losing!
Between living and dying!!
I'll tell you this: in any fight, it's the guy who's willing to die, who's gonna win that inch and I know, if im gonna have any life anymore, it's because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch
because, that's what living is!
The six inches in front of your face!!
Now, I can't make you do it: you gotta look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes!
Now, I think you're gonna see a guy, who will go that inch with you.
You're gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows, when it comes down to it, you're gonna do the same for him.
Thats a team, gentlemen, and, either we heal, NOW, as a team, or we will die as individuals.
That's football, guys.
Thats all it is.
Now, what are you gonna do?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Bill Hybels, the founding and senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church often says "The local church is the hope of the world".

What does this mean? What does it mean for Pathway - where the focus is not on the building we occupy?

Many cathedrals and stately homes provide mirrors so that you can look at the decorative ceiling without having to strain your necks. But the mirror, even if it is clean and free from imperfections cannot show the entire ceiling - but without looking in the mirror first, you may not realise that the ceiling is worth looking at.

In the same way, as Christians, we should be mirrors reflecting Christ - we may be imperfect, limited reflectors, but as people look at us, they should see enough of Christ to want to have a look directly.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Over the next three weeks we will be looking at John 14:1-4 where Jesus tells His disciples, and us, not to be troubled but to trust Him.

The image of a house with many rooms can be used in various ways. One is obviously a description of heaven, but probably not as literally as we sometimes think, but another is a description of God’s kingdom right now, here on earth. There are many rooms in God’s family home where He wants us to live and the great thing is that He wants us to ‘decorate’ them in different ways and have some individuality. Just like in your house there are some areas that are more communal, where family members, and sometimes visitors, spend time together and these spaces are more accessible and open to different people’s needs. But there are also more private rooms, like bedrooms for example, that are only really used by one or two people and these rooms are more tailored to their needs and tastes. A teenager’s bedroom generally looks quite different from mum or dads, it certainly sounds different (and if it’s a lads room then may even have a, how can we say it, distinctive smell!)

Well we’re looking at the kingdom of God in the same way, some areas of church life are supposed to be more open, accessible and public but there are other areas where worship and prayer become more private, intimate affairs, between you and God. This is the way it is supposed to be, the way God designed it to be.

This year at Pathway is going to be a time where we focus our outreach into three very specific events, and culminate in a fantastic Christmas celebration where we are hoping, praying for and expecting to see both main rooms of the building full. Although the events through the year will be quite different, they will be similarities in terms of who we are hoping will attend. The aim is to build relationships up over the year through contact at various points and ‘build a fringe’ in terms of membership of Pathway. One of the most successful methods of sharing the gospel in our society and in this age is to keep aiming to ‘build the fringe and move the fringe’.

<itunes:summary>In 1 Thes 5:12-24 Paul tells us to hold our church leaders in the highest regard because of their work. It is important to hold everybody who is part of our church in the highest regard - including the leader. Not because the leader is any "better" - in fact if anyone thinks that they are qualified to lead a church is probably not suitable! What we are qualified for is to be a disciple, a learner - being actively engaged at becoming more like Jesus.

What do we need to learn as a church?

	be patient with everyone
 	encourage the timid
 	help the weak

Mosaic (in Thame) and Pure are about training, enabling, and releasing young people to leadership - and this applies to the church in general: this means that we have to allow less experienced people to fail, to fall over, but support them and help them get up again and move on.

A mark of discipleship is that we don't pay back wrong for wrong - we do not deal in revenge.

Paul encourages us to pray continually and be joyful always - what do we have to be thankful for? You don't need to go to the Phillipines to realise how much we have going for us in this country.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>At times you may feel young - other times you may feel old, but should your feelings, circumstances, or even your age, determine how old you are? And what about the wider church?
Isaiah 40 is a turning point in the book. Between chapter 39 and 40 is a 200 year gap.

The people had got used to being an oppressed and scattered people - but Isaiah 40:1 starts "Comfort, comfort my people" - God is on the move.

Life is tiring, trying to fit church life into family life and work life is really hard work, although this is probably not how God intended it. What we can do is hope in the Lord - and we will renew our strength, and soar on wings like eagles. Isaiah 40:31</itunes:summary>

In exploring this there are two questions that we need to address:

	Where are we?

One thing is certain - we are no longer an experiment or a plant - we are a church, indeed we are God's church - and we have a simple task, to build His church in this place at this time.</itunes:summary>

Five questions each starting "what would it be like if ..."

we are the sort of church that the "friends generation" were at home in
we are known as a generous church
a church that engages with the community
