<itunes:summary>Some verses of the Bible are very well known (for example John 3:16) and parts of Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome is no exception - but sometimes we need to read on, to get the rest of the verse in context, for example Romans 3:23 - sometimes we stop too soon and miss an important punctuation mark.

Everyone - no matter who you are, what you've done, what your background is under the same judgement - but everyone gets the same freedom.

<itunes:summary>We probably would not have liked living during the time of the Roman empire - but it was a time of great change, and the early church was finding its feet.

Paul, was writing to a church that had both Jew and Gentile people in it - those "under the Law (of Moses)" and those not under the law, and Paul spoke to each group separately ... but his underlying message is that the outward signs of the law are not the issue - as Christians, it is our relationship with the law that is written within us. This is the basis of our unity.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>We can have a relationship with Jesus and it this makes our faith alive. But sometimes we are nearer to Jesus than other times - it does vary, not static.

Do we need to get the excitement back into the relationship?
And while we are thinking about that - what about judging other people ?
In the letter to the Romans, Paul has something to say about judging and being judged. How does that affect us?

 <itunes:summary>Who was Mary?

In some traditions there are only two Marys - the Mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdelene.
Others suggest there may have been seven distinct people called Mary in the New Testament.
Hollywood and the media over the years may have blurred the events to make a good story.

So can we find the truth, and how does it help us today?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>We are at the end of our short series of worship based on Mark 12:30.

And we hope that by now you realise that worship is not simply singing songs on a Sunday morning - rather it is something we do all the time. Worship is as much about who we are as it is about what we do.

Some verses to look at: (you can click the links to view them, thanks to Biblegateway.com and Scripturizer Remix

	Ps 93:1
	Ps 96:6
	Ps 118:14
	1 Tim 1:12

Mike Pilavachi tells us

The heart of worship is and always has been blessing Him, coming to intimacy with Him, giving to Him, he is the centre of worship and how dare we ever make us the centre of worship. Worship isn't to please me, it's to please Jesus. Worship is for Jesus, it's to Jesus, and it's about Jesus.

If our job is to worship with all our stength, and worship is about servingm then the basic question is "What would you like the people who see and hear us in worship to think about Jesus"?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In Mark 12:30, we are told to love God with all our heart and with all our soul and all our mind. Sung worship is one expression of that love.

Consider the songs that we used this morning. Why were they chosen? And what is the message behind the words?

What good is it, to gain the whole world, but lose your soul
God in my waking/God in my sleeping/God in my resting/There in my working
Where Your streams of abundance flow/Blessed be Your name
I will offer up my life in spirit and truth Pouring out the oil of love as my worship to you

<itunes:summary>A well known story - the son who takes his inheritance early, squanders it, then realises that he would be better being a servant for his father than a starving pig herder in a strange land.

Or it is the story of the father, who gives his son the freedom to choose what to do with his life - hoping each day that the son would want to spend it with him - and seeing the son returning on the horizon runs out to meet him.

The Reconciliation sculpture is by Margaret Adams Parker in the grounds of the Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. Images of the sculpture.

<itunes:summary>David (later King of Israel) was a young shepherd boy who took on the champion of the Phillistines - by any measure it is an unfair battle.

(The story is in the Old Testament in 1 Sam 17.)

There are some things in our society that are big and scary: on the face of it, there seems to be an similar unequal battle. So do we run away from the fight? Knowing that God is with us; that He has a plan, like David we can run into the battle.

David knew who he was - didn't need extra bits and pieces.
He knew he committed to the fight - so he ran into it.
He knew that he had God with him.

Sarah introduces a short series of talks on people who ran - starting with the story of Jonah.

When God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, he was afraid - and ran in the other direction. Why was he afraid, and what can we learn about facing change and the unknown?

Updated 13 Sep iTunes seems to be only listing the first MP3 file (which is an introduction to the series) so I've taken that off here and added it to a different page.</itunes:summary>

The Battlefield of the Mind

	Author: Joyce Meyer
	ISBN: 0446691097
	Publisher:Time Warner International

A reviewer on Amazon writes:

Joyce puts into simple, humourous language the answers to the struggles experienced by many Christians as we attempt to 'renew our minds' with the Word of God. She speaks in a simple and straightforward manner, identifying with those of us who have problems and sharing with us her own experience. This book encourages and teaches us how to overcome the mindsets which have held many of us back for far too long.

Waking the dead

Amazon site says:

Presents the heart as central to life. Not only is the heart essential; the heart God has ransomed is also good. Building on these foundational truths, Eldredge shows readers why real Christianity is a process of restoration, where the broken parts of our hearts are mended and the captive parts are set free.

<itunes:summary>In Oliver Stone's film Any Given Sunday a football coach (Tony D'Amato, played by Al Pachino) makes an inspirational speech to the team ...

Either, we heal, as a team, or we're gonna crumble inch by inch, play by play till we're finished.
We're in hell right now, gentlemen, believe me, and we can stay here or we can fight our way back into the light we can climb outta hell one inch at a time.
...
But, you only learn that, when you start losing stuff you find out, life's a game of inches.
So is football, because, in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small.

I mean, one half a step too late, or too early, and you dont quite make it, one half second too slow, too fast, you dont quite catch it, the inches we need are everywhere around us , they're in every break of the game, every minute, every second.
On this team, we fight for that inch.
On this team, we tear ourselves and everyone else around us, to pieces for that inch.
We claw with our fingernails for that inch, because we know, when we head up all those inches, thats gonna make the difference, between winning and losing!
Between living and dying!!
I'll tell you this: in any fight, it's the guy who's willing to die, who's gonna win that inch and I know, if im gonna have any life anymore, it's because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch
because, that's what living is!
The six inches in front of your face!!
Now, I can't make you do it: you gotta look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes!
Now, I think you're gonna see a guy, who will go that inch with you.
You're gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows, when it comes down to it, you're gonna do the same for him.
Thats a team, gentlemen, and, either we heal, NOW, as a team, or we will die as individuals.
That's football, guys.
Thats all it is.
Now, what are you gonna do?</itunes:summary>

We continue our exploration of themes inspired by U2 lyrics from How to dismantle an atomic bomb.

Right from the start of the Book of Genesis it is clear that we are not meant to be alone - that we need companionship and community.
Jesus sent out the disciples in twos in Mark 6:7-13 because then people would not only see two Christians they would see a small Christian community.

<itunes:summary>How to dismantle an atomic bomb - "Ok so I confess it is the strangest sermon title I have ever been given" says Alan.

Metaphorical bombs strike if anything with even greater impact that the atom bombs used to end the 2nd Wolrd War. Divorce, abuse, Alzheimerrsquo;s, cancer, depression and many more shells have exploded and are exploding all around us. How are we in the name of the God we love and the Lord we serve going to defuse those bombs either to prevent the damage or to bring healing into it?

In this Easter season we believe in new life and in resurrection and those things must in some way or other apply to those pains and potential pains.

I have ministered in two university cities and in both parishes there was a huge ministry in the vicarage for lonely and homesick students. In one of those parishes a seaside parish another huge proportion of ministry was to lonely elderly people who had moved away from their traditional home to find a dream. Then one partner had died leaving the other lonely and desolate. </itunes:summary>

Romans 2:4 talks about the kindness of God which leads us to repentance. "Kindness" appears about 50 times in the Bible - mainly in the Old Testament. We believe that God has shown us kindness through loving us and accepting us in Jesus and we want to live our lives in a way that shows that kindness to the community.

<itunes:summary>Bill Hybels, the founding and senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church often says "The local church is the hope of the world".

What does this mean? What does it mean for Pathway - where the focus is not on the building we occupy?

Many cathedrals and stately homes provide mirrors so that you can look at the decorative ceiling without having to strain your necks. But the mirror, even if it is clean and free from imperfections cannot show the entire ceiling - but without looking in the mirror first, you may not realise that the ceiling is worth looking at.

In the same way, as Christians, we should be mirrors reflecting Christ - we may be imperfect, limited reflectors, but as people look at us, they should see enough of Christ to want to have a look directly.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Wouldnrsquo;t it be great if our heart beat so much with the heart of Jesus that we would meet a need and know what Jesus would want us to do and do it without complaining or whinging. That does not mean it wont be scary or risky. But just letrsquo;s remind ourselves of what we believe.

We believe that there are many rooms in our fathers house and that there is a room for as many people in Chilwell as we can welcome in and for those of us that trust Christ it means that we show in our lives and actions that we are doing this out of a confidence that one of those rooms is also for us. We believe that Jesus is the way to life and we believe that he wants us to point others to him.

We believe that he forever long has given us this place as a base to serve him from. A good base and we praise him for it.

As we believe Jesus in all these things lets believe that this year 2007 will be best year of Pathwayrsquo;s ten years. A year of growth in all kinds of ways and a year in which we glorify our master Jesus by doing him the courtesy of believing and trusting him.

<itunes:summary>Megacities are places with more than 10 million people - about half the world population live in cities. Some are very affluent, others like Lagos have a large population of people living in very poor conditions.
Jesus says that he is going to prepare a place for us, but how much does it really mean to us? To many of the world's population, there is a hope that the future will be much better than their current conditions, but is our hope where our money is?
He said that He would return - if we were to know that he will return tomorow, how much would it really affect us and the way we live?

<itunes:summary>Over the next three weeks we will be looking at John 14:1-4 where Jesus tells His disciples, and us, not to be troubled but to trust Him.

The image of a house with many rooms can be used in various ways. One is obviously a description of heaven, but probably not as literally as we sometimes think, but another is a description of Godrsquo;s kingdom right now, here on earth. There are many rooms in Godrsquo;s family home where He wants us to live and the great thing is that He wants us to lsquo;decoratersquo; them in different ways and have some individuality. Just like in your house there are some areas that are more communal, where family members, and sometimes visitors, spend time together and these spaces are more accessible and open to different peoplersquo;s needs. But there are also more private rooms, like bedrooms for example, that are only really used by one or two people and these rooms are more tailored to their needs and tastes. A teenagerrsquo;s bedroom generally looks quite different from mum or dads, it certainly sounds different (and if itrsquo;s a lads room then may even have a, how can we say it, distinctive smell!)

Well wersquo;re looking at the kingdom of God in the same way, some areas of church life are supposed to be more open, accessible and public but there are other areas where worship and prayer become more private, intimate affairs, between you and God. This is the way it is supposed to be, the way God designed it to be.

This year at Pathway is going to be a time where we focus our outreach into three very specific events, and culminate in a fantastic Christmas celebration where we are hoping, praying for and expecting to see both main rooms of the building full. Although the events through the year will be quite different, they will be similarities in terms of who we are hoping will attend. The aim is to build relationships up over the year through contact at various points and lsquo;build a fringersquo; in terms of membership of Pathway. One of the most successful methods of sharing the gospel in our society and in this age is to keep aiming to lsquo;build the fringe and move the fringersquo;.
